This is how you test Google Meet Video quality before joining the call

Before even joining your Google Meet meeting, ideally there should be a way for you to do some pre checks to make sure that your audio, video and network settings are working fine and you can simulate how good you look and sound when you join the actual call.

In fact, that's the new feature (called Green Room) that Google Meet team rolled out now, which will allow you to do exactly that. so let me share my screen and show you how you can do those pre checks before you even you join a Google Meet meeting.

So I have this calendar test, meaning when I click on that, I see an option to join my Google Meet meeting. When I click on that, you will find this new check would say check your audio and video.

When you click on that, it will let you select your microphone, speaker and camera. Once you're satisfied with the devices that you want to test, click on next and it will open a green room asking you to capture a short clip which you can replay later, and make sure that you're sounding good on that, let me click on start to perform these pre checks.

I would just say "I am just testing my audio and video" and now within a few second it shows me the results highlighting my mic, speaker, camera and network connection is working absolutely fine.

I can also replay the clip that I just recorded to check if my video feed looks good, and my audio is clear.

As my camera, mic, speaker and network is working absolutely fine, I can go ahead and close the pre check window and join my actual Google Meeting now.

In case if there are any issues, for example, if intentionally block my camera and speaker, and then perform these audio and video pre checks, Google Meet would show me the issues along with context to correct them, so I can do the required corrections and come back to perform these checks again.

This new feature to test your Google Meet audio, video, and networking settings is available in the following Google Workspace plans:

  • Google Workspace Essentials
  • Google Workspace Business Starter
  • Google Workspace Business Standard
  • Google Workspace Business Plus
  • Google Workspace Enterprise Essentials
  • Google Workspace Enterprise Standard
  • Google Workspace Enterprise Plus

It would also be available in legacy subscription plans including G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education, and Nonprofits).

It seems like a small functionality, but I promise it will help us avoid situations where we unintentionally muted our mic or camera and then join the meeting where nobody can hear us or see us.

I'm making this practice for myself that before joining each Google Meet meeting call, I will do leverage these pre check to test my audio, video and networking settings.

I hope you would also go with that recommendation,  in case if you have any questions, comments or feedback, please do not hesitate to put it in the comments below and I will be happy to collaborate.
